The Importance of Surrender in the Teachings of Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj
As taught by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, surrender is key to going into divine love and attaining God. He taught that to gain divine grace and the ultimate bliss, you should completely surrender yourself to God.
What Surrender Means
Renouncing Deception: It requires a full abandonment of all pretences and a retreat into innocence and genuine before God.
Mind Attached to God: The mind must consider God alone to be everything and must accept Him with the whole heart. The first rule of surrender is to ensure that one's own mind and intellect always side with God and Guru.
How to Achieve Complete Surrender
Devotional Practice: Surrender is attained by pure, consistent devotion, which purifies the mind and slowly leads the intellect into the complete submission of God.
Guidance of a Guru: Devotional practices must be supervised by a God-realized Guru or spiritual master.
Mental Engagement: Devotion means mental effort as opposed to merely physical activity. Doing things like going to temples or chanting the name of God mechanically will not help. To meditate privately on God’s form is what devotion is.
Rupdhyana: The meditative process described therein is emphasized by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj and is termed by him 'Rupdhyana,' which means meditating upon the divine personal figure. See God standing before you, speak to Him within your mind, and express your love to Him.
Constant Awareness of God: Practice perceiving God's presence always as your Defender and Witness engaging your actions and thoughts. Do everything with the intention of pleasing God.
Establishing a Relationship with God: Acknowledge God as your true relative and build a personal relationship with Him-whether as a beloved, parent, sibling, friend, or master.
Why Surrender is Important
Surrender is very essential for attaining divine grace. The boundless love of God can only be granted by way of grace. Grace can be attracted when one fully surrenders at the lotus feet of God. True surrender can only occur when the heart, or rather, the mind is totally purified. The Vedas state that by material intellect, it is impossible to understand God as He is divine and that the intellect remains material. Divine knowledge cannot be grasped with a material mind. Yet, through continued devotion, the soul purifies the mind more and more so that the intellect is submissive to God. When that submission is at its height, God showers His grace on the soul so that it can finally have a taste of divine bliss.
The devotees can purify their hearts by surrendering to God, who then bestows upon them Divine Grace, upon which their souls may eventually attain the true goal of life-unlimited and eternal bliss.
